Versal: My New Favorite Course Authoring Tool

But probably my newest absolute favorite teaching tool is Versal, which is a newbie in the online course creation market. It’s my current favorite because it’s just so fun to use, and whether you’re a teacher or a learner, I think you’ll agree.

The interface is simple and intuitive, with drag-and-drop gadgets so you can customize content, presentation, and interactivity. Some of these gadgets are native to Versal, but there are also integrations with other apps you know and love (think Prezi, Quizlet, and Google Docs).

And perhaps the best part of this all? It’s easy to collaborate.

Which makes it an awesome tool for teaching, and an even better one for learning. Think of the possibilities for course participants to be able to create their own reflections and proof of knowledge! Think about the potential that hands-on workshops will have with something like this: a platform where you can create courses, material collections, and apply new skills immediately. I know I’ll be using it in my next hands-on workshop, and incorporating it into future task-based talent development solutions.

When I first started playing around with Versal, at the beginning of this year, it didn’t play nicely on tablets, which was a deal-breaker for me at the time. But there’s now a Chrome App which is very exciting—I’m hoping an iOS app is on the way.

What excites me most about about this tool is the potential it has to bring real interactivity to online courses through collaboration and customization. That’s always been the biggest issue I’ve seen with online courses, and indeed one of the reasons that many people either don’t succeed (or finish) them, or prefer in-person training.

Have you tried Versal yet? What have you used it for? What’s your opinion on the future of interactivity in online courses? What other authoring tools do you use?
