Language Coach Responsibility #7: Understand and Help Overcome Obstacles

Why is this important?

Because to really be able to empathize with the obstacles that a language learner encounters, you need to know what it’s like for yourself. Having experienced the struggles that are common to other language learners gives a language coach crucial insight into how to best help a language learner to overcome any obstacles that they’re facing currently or might face in the future.

Being able to understand obstacles is the only way a language coach will be able to provide tips or tools for the learner to overcome them; of course, it’s impossible to be able to completely understand and predict all the situations that a language learner will encounter, but being able to empathize to some degree with similar issues will allow a flexible and resourceful language coach to provide possible solutions or coping strategies for hurdles that a learner encounters.

When a language learner realizes that their struggles are perfectly normal, and more importantly, surmountable, then they’re more likely to stay on track and make consistent progress.

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” -John Quincy Adams
