Business of Language Podcast Episode 8: Interview with Sarah Zhang

In this episode of the Business of Language Podcast, I have the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Zhang, a student at the University of Virginia. Sarah is a double major in linguistics and economics, and she had the opportunity to attend a seminar and complete an internship with the University of Gent (Belgium)’s Acoustic Phonetics Lab in the summer of 2015.

Sarah will be completing her senior thesis in the next academic year, and her research explores a possible connection between economics and linguistics, which is pretty darn cool! You’ll have to listen to the podcast to get the details of her project. I know I won’t be the only one who is curious about what her research results will be. I plan on doing another interview with Sarah and her classmates in this summer program, for a quick follow-up on their research as well as their plans for the future.

Besides her own research interests, we also delve into what she’s learning this summer—from our interview, I learn what an acoustic phonetics lab is and what can be studied there, plus all kinds of interesting morsels that make me wish I were back in undergrad and could take all the classes that Sarah gets to take.

This is the first interview I’ve done with a language lover who is still in school—and it won’t be the last! I love hearing from people who are just starting to explore all the possibilities that a language degree can bring them.
